Rock

Went to my first real rock concert today!  Unfortunately I was afraid to bring my good camera so my picture ended up being of cell phone quality.  It was a pretty good concert though, All American Rejects came to NAU and some of my friends and I got let down onto the floor from the cheap (free) seats.  I think taking a picture from the floor with all of the people in front was a much better way to get a real picture of the concert and what it was like to be there.

College

This is how my roommate and I looked all night.  Taking pictures in such low lighting can be frustrating when I want to preserve colors and try to omit noise, but I actually like the way this one turned out.

Arc

Took a slightly longer than usual photo walk on this day, this is one of the arches on the outside of the Skydome, the football stadium at NAU.

Colors

Looking for a picture in my dorm room tonight I liked the way that all of the colors on my notebooks looked lined up here.  Framing a picture to show all of them was a little difficult, I think just a little higher angle would have been good here.

March 27, 2012

Path

The path that goes from north to south campus at NAU looks a little creepy empty at night.

Change

I was walking by my desk and this pile of change caught the light just the right way and I knew what my picture for the day would be.  Monitor calibration may still be a problem though, the lighting looked good on the screen when I edited this picture but on another one the pennies look orange.  Hmmm...

Ducky

A rubber duck with a snorkel peeking out from behind a coffee mug.  Random stuff in my dorm room picture? I think so.

March 24, 2012

Thaw

I walked down the street to take this picture this afternoon without wearing a jacket! The trees lit up as they are with the snow still visible on the mountain looked like a perfect Flagstaff spring day.

Shared

Actually neither of these forks were mine, some friends had shared a cheesecake (for whatever reason, the entire crust was not eaten) and left their forks like this on the plate, I didn't even have to rearrange them creatively.

Box

An extremely useful container due to it's qualities of being waterproof and very nearly indestructible, I take this ammo box on many of my road trips and keep it nearby just in case I might need it.

Study

Wednesday evenings are generally spent with friends doing work in the library, leading to a mass of computers, papers, books, and writing implements.

March 20, 2012

Spring

This happy looking snowman popped up right after the big storm that just hit Flagstaff.  I noticed him as I was running down the stairs to class and I had to go back and take a picture.

March 19, 2012

Stuck

I just don't think this bike is going anywhere.  This bike has been in the same place and relatively the same condition since winter started.  This is why some of us keep our bikes inside, but this one does make me laugh a bit when I see it.

March 18, 2012

Snowed

The part of the sign that is completely obscured by snow says "Alpine."  How appropriate.

March 17, 2012

Desert

This is the view from Tonto National Monument looking towards Lake Roosevelt.  It was a relatively cloudy day for photography so I missed the classic harsh bright lighting that I often like in desert pictures.  I'm still not wild about how the lighting turned out on this one but I like the composition and I learned some about color curves while trying to make the background a little less washed out.

March 16, 2012

Reflection

So I broke a few rules here, centered the sun horizontally (tisk tisk) and pointed my camera directly at the sun.  That second one did make me a little nervous but it was low enough that I figured the atmosphere gave the components a little extra protection.  If I'd had my polarizing filter it probably would have helped.  This is upper Lake Mary, a few miles outside of Flagstaff.

March 15, 2012

Stars

Now that sunset is at a time when I can attempt it, I have been experimenting with pictures of the stars.  I actually think that these are planets (Jupiter and Venus?) but I didn't bother to check when I got back to the dorm.  What I've been having a hard time with here is deciding where to focus, the low f-stop needed to get star pictures won't allow you to focus on the stars and the foreground at the same time needless to say.

March 14, 2012

Exit

What happens when you're doing a 365 project and you feel sick and tired and you're living in a dorm emptier than the Overlook Hotel?  You take one step outside the door and try (apparently fail) to make something interesting out of the exit sign.  Proceed to give the picture an unimaginative title.

March 13, 2012

Pup

I love the pictures I didn't set out to take!  I was walking downtown to take another of my typical city stills and I noticed this puppy watching me (and trying not to fall asleep) on a doorstep.  I kind of wish he was a color that didn't blend into the wall quite so well, but what makes photography interesting is working with what you have.

March 12, 2012

Bowl

There was a lot of fear associated with this day.  I don't like taking pictures on my phone for this project just because (as seen in this one) the resolution is lower and the lighting is often flat.  In addition, I spent half an hour thinking I had neglected to take a picture for this day because the Dropbox app that I use to send my phone pictures to my computer had been waiting for a Wifi connection to upload the pictures so they hadn't shown up on my computer yet.  This is just a bowl on the counter in my family's Flagstaff house, nothing special, hence the "refuse" tag.

March 11, 2012

Boots

The title says it all.  In case you were wondering, they did not have feet in them at the time the picture was taken.

March 10, 2012

Humphreys

This was taken while walking with some friends through the woods north of Flagstaff.  We didn't even notice the view of the peaks while we were walking out but on the way back it was really all that any of us could notice.

March 9, 2012

Pipe

Maybe it's just me but I always find pipes and valves running up and down stairwells interesting to look at.  I especially like the way this one looks with the brick wall behind it.

March 8, 2012

Courtyard

Some days I just don't seem to get good pictures.  For example, this one looked like it was in focus on the camera screen and I really don't recall what I found interesting about it.

March 7, 2012

Untitled

This is the result of a discussion I had with my roommate about how noise can add to a picture if it is included intentionally.  Looking at some examples I thought it was an especially good effect in black and white pictures, so that's what I was trying for here.  A note on the title: this statue is outside the entrance to the NAU Cline Library.  The placard at its base says "Untitled."  Seems like they should have been able to come up with a title for this but I figured if the artist couldn't think of an appropriate name, who am I to try?

March 6, 2012

Backlit

A nice windy stormy looking day in Flagstaff.  I think spring is coming.

March 5, 2012

Glass

The West end of the Union tonight.  I like the dark sky behind it.  I think my night pictures have improved a lot since I realized that an ISO 100 didn't really make for clear shots in the dark.

March 4, 2012

Stapled

All of the power poles in downtown Flagstaff look like this, they must have just been cleaned off or the staples wouldn't be visible under so many fliers.  This is me playing fun with aperture.

March 3, 2012

View

I went to someone's house for dinner in Doney Park today after a day volunteering with them.  This is the view when you stand right in front of their front window.  I'm just a little jealous.

March 2, 2012

Cloth

This is a really sparkly bright blue scarf.  Yes.  And why is the picture black and white?  It was apparently the only way to salvage the bad white balance in the photo I took, I think it's still okay, the black and white does bring out the shiny parts more.
